How to choose the right guitar strings for you
Making sure you have the right guitar strings is the most important thing you can do to improve your playing. Guitar strings come in a range of ‘gauges’ (the thickness of the string). The heavier the gauge the thicker the string.
Lighter gauge strings are great for bending and are generally easier to play, especially if you’re just starting out. Because they’re thinner they are easier to bend and give you more control, most notably in your solos. The downside is that they are prone to breaking a little more easily and can lack the sustain and volume you get from heavier gauge strings. If you’re struggling to press the strings down then you should opt for a lighter gauge set of guitar strings. Usually 9-42 or 10-46 are the most popular string sets for electric guitars.
Heavier gauge strings are great if you want a beefier tone to your playing. They give you greater sustain and volume compared to lighter gauge strings. Metal guitarists use heavy gauge strings as they give you a heavier sound and perform better when in drop tunings. They are however harder to press down and can add stress to the neck of the guitar. If you’re after a heavier tone or play in tunings lower than standard then you should opt for a heavier gauge. We recommend choosing 11-48 or 12-56 for heavy gauge strings.
